5 Fantastic Suffolk Art Galleries
Ipswich Art Gallery
Ipswich Art Gallery holds all year round displays and showcases internationally acclaimed exhibitions. Housed in an old Victorian school building it’s a fabulous platform for local artists to display their work.
The Gallery is currently hosting Cabaret Mechanical (ends 3 Nov 2019). They create extremely clever, mechanical sculptures. From quirky designs to automated contraptions straight from fairy tales the hands-on element of the art makes this a fun visit for everyone in the family whether they are art fans or not! Fantastical and sometimes downright bizarre you’ll be laughing with delight as you make your way through their mechanical world.
The interactive display is even combined with experimental workshops so you can learn all about this fascinating kinetic art for yourself.
The Art Gallery is located next door to Ipswich Museum so make sure you don’t leave without checking out Wool-I-am – the Ipswich Museum’s woolly mammoth!
The Maltings Gallery
Snape Maltings, one of the UK’s leading creative campuses has no less than four separate Art galleries on site. Maltings, Quay, Lettering and The Pond Gallery.
Space is dedicated to local and East Anglian Artists, from nationally acclaimed big names to rising local stars. Suffolk’s rich creative story is truly showcased among its walls.
Some exhibitions are brief and fleeting whilst others stay for full seasons at the Galleries. Take a look at their website for full details of what’s on while you’re visiting. You won’t be disappointed.
You can spend a whole day at Snape Maltings, it’s far more than simply music and art, enjoy river trips, nature tours, shopping and even a food hall showcasing our wonderful local produce.
Snape Maltings is just minutes away from our luxury accommodation here at Mollett’s Farm and we always relish the opportunity to show off this world-class arts centre, right on our doorstep.
Wolsey Art Gallery at Christchurch
Another Ipswich Art Gallery to include on a day trip to Ipswich Town. Housed in the stunning Christchurch Park this gallery holds the largest collection of Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable paintings outside of London. This is unsurprising as both artists lived in the area and were heavily influenced by our stunning scenery.
Christchurch Mansion, museum and gallery even featured in our recent blog post about the Historic Hidden Gems on the Suffolk Heritage Coast – take a read now to find out more! Right now at the Gallery is the exhibition Made in Suffolk – a free exhibition curated by John Sheeran, proud father of, you guessed it, Suffolk’s most famous Ed. It focuses on the singer songwriter’s deep affection for his home county and features portraits, paintings, photographs and even the artist’s handwritten lyrics in a poignant, fascinating insight into the rise and rise of Ed Sheeran.
The Southwold Gallery
The beautiful little seaside town of Southwold is always a delight to visit. It’s home to a famous lighthouse, an award-winning pier and also a fabulous art collective – packed full of art, ceramics, glass, jewellery and sculptures from exclusively Suffolk artists. The result is practically a virtual tour through the familiar colours, shapes and patterns of this part of the world. The Southwold Gallery is a veritable treasure trove; the kind of gem you dream of finding on holiday. With prices to suit all budgets you’re sure to leave with the perfect piece to remember your magical time with us.
George Farnham Gallery
This unassuming shopfront in Saxmundham houses a stunning collection of art. This intimate eclectic collection is heavily influenced by the characters of its owners and their delightful chocolate spaniel, George Farnham.
