Our cosy corner of Suffolk is the perfect place for a staycation this Summer.
Geographically we are officially the driest county in the UK. We really do get more than our fair share of gorgeous weather here and there are plenty of shows, festivals, concerts and competitions to captivate and charm you all Summer long.
You will find that Mollett’s Farm is the perfect base from which to explore and enjoy these fabulous Summer spectacles.
We all know plenty about the big attractions Suffolk has to offer this time of year like Latitude Festival and or a visit to Snape Maltings but what else is there to see and do during the warmer weather on the amazing East Anglian Coast?
The old Suffolk name for crabbing, babbing is derived from the bab, which is what the weight tied to the end of a fishing line was known as.
Walberswick, under half an hour away from our luxury accommodation, used to be home to the British Crabbing Championships. Although those days are over, you’ll still find some superb crabs here, and they’ll be enthusiastically waiting for you and your bacon now that the Championships aren’t feeding them up!
Crabbing is an inexpensive activity for young and old alike. It’s brilliant fun and quite addictive. The quay at Aldeburgh also has fabulous opportunities for crabbing if you want to stay a little closer to home!
The best time to crab is when the tide is coming in, this is when they are naturally coming in for food. Don’t forget to pop them back into the water when you’re finished, so they can carry on with their day.
One of the biggest carnivals in the area, last year the Aldeburgh Carnival even won an EADT/EDP Tourism award for Family Tourism Event of the Year.
It’s now over 170 years old and ‘Ye olde Marine Regatta’, as it was originally, has morphed into a 3 day event and is just as popular in 21st century Suffolk as it was yesteryear.
This year’s theme is ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ in honour of 100 years of Aldeburgh Cinema, it’s going to be a good one!
It’s a 3-day event, Saturday is Music Day with live music all over the town, performed by local bands.
Sunday is sports day with a mini-marathon and United Songs of Praise on the green.
Monday is traditionally Carnival Day itself; with the famous procession, a spectacular fireworks display, lantern parade and sea swimming races! This is a chance not to miss out of a wholesome Suffolk summer extravaganza.
Southwold’s Maize Maze is well known as a great family day out but there’s more to this adventure playground than simply its two bewildering mazes. New for this summer are not 1, not 2, but 3 jumping pillows!! These giant trampolines are great fun and, even better, they’re not just for kids. So, have a go, challenge the kids…or each other! There’s plenty more to keep everyone entertained for the day including go-karting, climbing, zip wires and, of course, those confounding maize mazes!
If the weather does take a turn though it’s not a problem as there are plenty of other activities which will keep you dry and smiling
You may recognise Westleton as the village where Wills and Kate spent their first anniversary, but did you know that this tranquil little Suffolkonian village, just a 15 minute drive from Mollett’s Farm is also the home of the annual Barrell Fair? This ancient tradition was resurrected in 1995 and has been growing in popularity ever since.
These days, the celebration is a far more elegant affair with stalls, food and drink, but the all-important barrel race still takes place on the village green!
This year’s affair will be silver themed in celebration of the events Silver Jubilee. This is a really special opportunity to get a real taste of proper Suffolk tradition. There will even be Morris dancers and plenty of local treats to keep you entertained all day.
We love our dogs, and, let’s be honest, a holiday without your four-legged friends just doesn’t feel right. Staying at Mollett’s Farm means that your adorable pooch can join in the fun too. There are plenty of dog-friendly shops, cafes and pubs who will welcome you all with open arms, just ask us when you arrive, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Consider a staycation this summer – no airport queues, no language barriers and no confusing currency conversions! Just fresh air, fabulous local food and drink and the beautiful heritage countryside and coast. We can’t wait to welcome you to Mollett’s Farm, we have so much to showcase.
