Suffolk’s Celebration of Steam this September

September is a brilliant month for events in Suffolk, and one event that draws a huge crowd every year is the Grand Henham Steam Rally. Passionate steam enthusiasts from all over Suffolk and the surrounding counties flock to attend the fun and festivities. The 15th and 16th of September this year mark the 44th annual Grand Henham Steam Rally. Over those 44 years the Rally has heated up, growing in size every year, and now 1000s of exhibitors attend Suffolk’s celebration of steam power in all its glory.

Henham Park in Lowestoft, just a 25-minute drive from our self-catered accommodation here at Mollett’s Farm, comes alive with a wealth of things to see and do with attractions and exhibits, demonstrations of working steam power, vintage and classic cars, craft stalls, a vintage fairground, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Why not take the kids along with you too? In a world that is evolving so quickly through fossil fuels and now moving towards electricity, the age of steam has long passed, many may never have never had the chance to see a steam engine, and with some of the wonderful hands on and educational exhibits that the Grand Henham Steam Rally has to offer, children can really get up close and personal with these wondrous machines. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be small to enjoy the exhibits, adults can get in on the fun too!

The pride of the Rally of course, is the wonderful collection of steam engines both big and small which are towed and rode to Henham Park by their extremely enthusiastic owners. You can really feel the passion and care that the owners have put in to maintaining these beautiful machines and take just a moment to speak to any of them and they will jump at the chance to share their knowledge about these incredible engines with you.

Some of the demonstrations even include the opportunity to take a ride around on one of the vehicles or take a step back in time with the opportunity to listen to beautiful music created using a steam powered organ, some of which are so loud they can be heard for miles!

With so much going on across the weekend you’re going to need a chance to relax and a cosy bed to sleep in before heading back into the fun of the festival on the second day. So why not join us here at Mollett’s Farm and stay in our luxury self-catered cottages or fully accessible cosy studios.
