Oh what a busy month August is in Suffolk. We aren’t just talking about here at our luxury accommodation on Mollett’s farm, there are local events and festivals dotted everywhere and it’s no wonder why! The weather in August is perfect exploring Suffolk outdoors, and when the heat ramps up and the sun is shining in the glorious blue skies then what better to do than visit a festival.
Suffolk is home to a thriving culture of festivals both big and small across the summer months and we could write a never-ending list of recommendations for you to go out, explore, and enjoy during your stay. For the purposes of this blog post we are going to focus on three of our favourite Suffolk festivals full of family fun that you can visit in the month of August!
Ipswich Maritime Festival – 18th – 19th August
Have an absolutely splashing time at the Ipswich Maritime Festival. This annual event located on the Ipswich Waterfront plays host to a celebration of nautical fun! This whole weekend packed with entertainment includes live on-stage music and performers to get down and boogie to, a fantastic food market to tantalise your taste buds with some of the best pop up food stalls Suffolk has to offer, a big beer festival showcasing some seriously tasty Suffolk ales, craft stalls with craft activities for the kids to enjoy too, and later on the Saturday night you can watch the sky light up with a dazzlingly bright firework display!
Ipswich Maritime festival wouldn’t have its name if it didn’t include without some serious ships and vessels so make sure to keep your eyes out for some of the amazing sailing barges but don’t be afraid if you see any pirates! This year’s theme is Salty Sailors and Swashbuckling Pirates.
Our Tip: The festival encompasses the whole of the Ipswich marina but don’t worry about getting sore feet there’s even a foot ferry and a land train to transport you around the site.
So with all this and so much more, the Ipswich Maritime Festival is not one to miss!
FolkEast – 17th – 19th August
A Folk and Arts festival just 4 minutes from our doorstep? Well who can say no to that? Apparently, nobody! Folk East returns this year for its 7th year in a row, Based in Glemham Hall, Folk East is boasts that it is nothing like other festivals, in fact it actually has more of the feel of a village fete but that definitely drives its family feel. Don’t let that fool you though this 3-day event has grown exponentially over the years and is bags of fun, with legendary award-winning bands from the genre headlining on the sunset stage, and up and coming artists creating a symphony of sounds on the other 5 stages there is something enjoyable for everyone at Folk East.
Don’t forget that this is an Arts festival too and there will be a wealth of stall and tents highlighting the skill and expertise of local Suffolk artists and artisan food makers alike. Arriving under its own steam is the one of the only surviving Garret steam tractors, and the blacksmiths and craftsmen will be making a clang at the smithing and traditional longbow workshops.
Our tip: head on over to the imaGINe bar to enjoy local Adnams gin and artisan tonics – perfect in hot, sunny weather!

Maui Waui Festival – 24th – 26th August
Just a pleasant 15 minute drive from our accommodation here at Mollett’s Farm, Peakhill Farm in Theberton plays host to a huge variation of events at Maui Waui across the bank holiday weekend. Now in its 6th year the festival pulls in acts from all across the globe Maui Waui promises something fun for all the family, and they pride themselves upon the all welcoming feel for the young or the old with entertainment including; accomplished and undiscovered bands, cabaret, comedy, craft stalls, and let’s not forget the full-scale circus!
Our tip: Head to the main stage to see some of the headliners and big acts that the festival has to offer, and while you’re there make sure to head to the Dressing Rail where you can help yourselves to fancy dress and festival gladrags for absolutely free and you can even take them home!
Now if your kids aren’t quite old enough to get dressed up and dancing at the main stage, don’t worry, Maui Waui even has a specially designed kids arena packed full of fun activities and fully trained staff who are just passionate and enthusiastic big kids, so you know you can relax knowing your kids are safe and sound. You can even join in with them on a host activities and workshops such as arts and crafts, archery, get messy with a pie in the face competition, and who doesn’t love a pirate disco!
