Head to Jimmy’s Farm for a delightful weekend for all the family, packed full of spring cheer, animal fun, tasty food. Live music and dancing and even an early visit from the Easter Bunny!
Spring in Suffolk has finally sprung. As the skies begin to turn bluer and sun peeks from the clouds our beautiful corner of the Suffolk coast takes on a dramatic makeover of colour and wildlife and as you step outside you can’t help but smile as you soak up the stunning scenery.
The arrival of spring always fills us with excitement of all the things to come for the rest of the year and it has already started. The bluebells are beginning to flower into an astonishing and expansive carpet across the ancient Captain’s Wood. The Mad March Hares of Havergate Island have donned their gloves for the mad wildlife spectacle that sees them competing in ‘boxing matches’. A beautiful population of birdlife returns to the country, and, of course, there are the hundreds of new, freshly born (and hatched), additions to Suffolk Farms far and wide. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in the topic of today’s post – The Annual Spring Fayre at Jimmy’s Farm.
Situated on the outskirts of Ipswich just 30 minutes from our luxury accommodation here at Mollett’s Farm, Jimmy Doherty’s vision was to start a livestock farm using traditional, free-range meat production practices rearing British rare-breeds.
What followed, we’re sure even Jimmy wasn’t prepared for. The farm was a huge success, and Jimmy gained local, and then national celebrity status, after the BBC followed the farm’s journey on Jimmy’s Farm, all the way back almost 10 years ago.
In addition to the working farm and butchery, the 100 acre plot of land is now home to a wildlife park, restaurant, vegetable and flower gardens, farm shop and clothing, gift and craft shops; whilst Jimmy himself has had a number of hit TV shows for both the BBC and Channel 4, and is the author of three bestselling books.
Jimmy’s Farm is so much more than just a hard-working farm. It’s easy to enjoy a full day at the farm at any time of year but during the Spring Fayre, which this year falls over the weekend of 6th April the Farm becomes a platform for the perfect spring Celebration, with Morris Dancers, carousel rides, Easter egg hunts and plenty more mayhem to keep everyone in the family entertained throughout the day.
Head to the Wildlife Park, pick up a bag of feed and meet the animals, you can even have a close encounter with some of the animals, the Farm’s experienced staff will talk visitors through how the animals are cared for and you can get up close and personal with fluffy guinea pigs, pig-like stripey tapir, cheeky racoons and more.
There are plenty of refreshments to be enjoyed at the Coffee Cabin, The Restaurant or The Field Kitchen, the menus are full to bursting with exciting, innovative local food combinations for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea or a decadent dinner. If you would rather cook in our fully equipped kitchen’s Jimmy’s Farm has a range of delicious produce (including their world-famous sausages) to take back and enjoy.
At the Spring Fayre, however, Jimmy’s Farm takes delicious local produce to another level with over 100 incredible street food stalls serving hot and cold food and drinks. Hog Roast, hot chocolate, local meats and cheeses and plenty of other exciting arts and crafts stalls to tempt you.
There is a full programme of events taking place across the Spring Fayre weekend, many of which are back by popular demand. Live lambing is an event that your family will remember for years to come, they can visit the lambs with their mothers and learn how to know when ewes are ready to lamb. Instil a lifelong interest in wildlife by encouraging your family to watch tiny chicks, and even hold them.
Mr Bunny’s Easter Grotto will be set up in the roundhouse; The Easter Egg Hunt is happening across the Farm, with donations going to Jimmy’s Farm preferred local charities; and new for this year, there will be performances of The Velveteen Rabbit – a charming tale of magic, friendship and hope bought to you by two actors, inventive puppetry and original songs by The Spring Spinning Wheel Theatre.
Be sure to take younger visitors to the play areas and bouncy pillow before heading home, for one last burst of excitement. You’ll be able to enjoy a quiet evening back at your luxury accommodation as the little ones will definitely be wiped out and in bed early after such a busy day!
All the new additions to the farm spell out a day of fun-filled, educational adventure for all the family.
